Easy Homemade Falafel
Now you will no longer have to make a trip to your favorite restaurant to have a good falafel platter or pita sandwich. If you just keep a few key ingredients in your pantry, you will be able to whip these Easy Falafel Patties up in no time. I like to use Grapeseed oil to fry these. I have baked them before, but the texture turns out a little differently. You don't need a lot of oil - they are not deep fried. I just used enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan by about an inch or so. They come out so crispy on the outside and nice and moist on the inside. I made these into patties, but if you shape them into little balls, of course you will yield more.
Ingredients
- 2-16oz cans of chickpeas
- 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1/2 medium onion, minced
- 4-5 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/2 small jalapeno minced (ribs and seeds removed)
- 2 TBS flour
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp coriander
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- 1/2 lemon, juiced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Grapeseed oil for frying
Directions
- Step 1 Drain and rinse chickpeas in a strainer and add to a mixing bowl
- Step 2 Mash the chickpeas with a potato masher until they become a mixture of some smashed and some chunky
- Step 3 Add the parsley, cilantro, onion, garlic, jalapeno, flour, seasonings, sesame seeds, lemon juice and salt and pepper
- Step 4 Mix to combine with a fork, continuing to mash a little as you go – it’s ok to have some of the chickpeas not fully mashed
- Step 5 Form the falafel mixture into balls or patties – whichever you prefer
- Step 6 Have a platter lined with paper towel ready to set the cooked patties on
- Step 7 In a large deep sided skillet, heat Grapeseed Oil on medium-low heat. You want about an inch of oil in the pan
- Step 8 After the oil has had a chance to heat, add enough patties to the pan so that they are not too crowded. You will want to cook them in batches. It’s important to keep enough room in between the patties so they don’t fall apart when you are trying to flip them. You will need room.
- Step 9 Cook the patties for about 15 minutes total, turning twice during the cooking process so they don’t get too dark on either side. If you are cooking small size falafel balls, make sure to adjust the cooking time to about 10 minutes total
- Step 10 Place on paper towel lined platter when finished cooking
How many falafels do you get from a single recipe?? Yum
About 10-12 medium size patties. If you make the little ball size, you will yield much more….. at least 20 or so.
