Spicy Mezcal Margarita
I LOVE a great Margarita! I typically order a classic opposed to a fruity or flavored one. However, I love heat or spice. Lately I've been on a jalapeno kick and have created several recipes that include this deliciously mild pepper. It's not just for food! I love it in this Margarita. It's only used as a garnish with a few of the seeds. You can remove the ribs and the seeds to make it less spicy if you like. I also used this Worm Salt I picked up in Mexico City. If I didn't have the Worm Salt, I would use Kosher Salt and add lime zest and cayenne pepper to rim my glasses. I love how that little extra kick makes your lips tingle. I have just recently become a fan of Mezcal - which happens to be very smoky. Feel free to substitute with YOUR favorite Tequila! And please..... never ever buy those Margarita Mixes! They're awful! All you need is some Lite Agave or your homemade Simple Syrup and fresh squeezed lime juice...... so much better and cleaner. Get yourself a little juicer or a lemon reamer or one of those hand tools from Sur La Table. The reason this will serve 2-4 is because it depends on the size of your glasses. As you can see, mine are HUGE!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups of Zignum Reposado Mezcal (or your favorite Tequila)
- 1/3 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
- 1/4 cup lite agave syrup
- 1 jalapeno thinly sliced, seeds and ribs removed
- Grand Marnier or Cointreau for garnish 🙂
- 1 lime cut into wedges for garnish
- Salt for rimming Margarita glasses
Directions
- Step 1 Wet the rim of 2-4 Margarita glasses with a lime wedge and salt (if you are using salt) and fill each glass with ice
- Step 2 Garnish each glass with a wedge of lime
- Step 3 Juice about 4 limes into a glass measuring cup. You want to yield about 1/3 cup then add to a cocktail shaker filled with ice
- Step 4 Add agave and Mezcal or Tequila to the cocktail shaker
- Step 5 Cover tightly and shake vigorously
- Step 6 Fill each glass with the deliciousness from the cocktail shaker
- Step 7 Drizzle a little Grand Marnier over the top of each drink. Just a little!
- Step 8 Place 3-4 jalapeno slices on top of each drink
- Step 9 Enjoy! Repeat!!
It looks like I will be stopping by the liquor store on my way home from work today. I need to make this margarita for Cinco de Mayo this weekend! I was going to have a Skinny Girl margarita but hell no, not after reading this!
Thank you for the inspiration Tam!
